With fall here you’re probably not spending much time thinking about your lawn maintenance. But fall, with cooler temperatures and rainfall, is the perfect time to prepare your lawn for next spring.
During the fall your grass is busily absorbing nutrients and moisture in preparation for a dormant winter. A little attention to your lawn now can result in big pay offs come spring. Here’s some great tips to help assure you lush lawn this spring.
Continue to mow your lawn during the fall as needed. As the temperatures continue to drop and the lawn starts to grow slower drop the mower’s blade height to 2” for the last two cuttings of the year. That will allow more sunlight to reach the crown of the grass, and there will be less leaf to turn brown during the winter.
Remember, try to never trim off more than 1/3 of the grass blades at one time.
Don’t Wait to Clean Up Leaves
Don’t wait until all the leaves have fallen from the trees to start cleaning them up. Leaves can build up and bind together with moisture forming a barrier that will suffocate grass and breed fungus. Regularly clean up your lawn of leaves to prevent damage to your lawn. Remember, Corion Landscape Management offers lawn maintenance and clean up packages if you would like us to take care of this for you!
Aerate the Soil
Fall is a great time to aerate your lawn. By aerating your lawn you create holes in your soil allowing your lawn to better soak up moisture and nutrients to promote growth. Corion Landscape offers lawn aeration and other services throughout the year.
Fertilize for Future Growth
A fall application of fertilizer delivers essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring.
Fill in Any Bald Areas
Use a garden rake to scratch loose the soil at the bald spot in your lawn. Then apply soil and seed over the area. Lightly compact the mixture, then water thoroughly, and continue to keep moist for two weeks. If you have questions Corion Landscape Management is here to help!
Kill Weeds Before Winter
Don’t let weeds in your lawn absorb all the nutrients this winter. If you take the time to apply an herbicide now you can help assure that weeds won’t return in your lawn in the spring.
